Goal and objectives:
- To identify gaps and barriers to the implementation of environmental mainstreaming;
- To suggest ways and means whereby existing institutions and decision making processes in the British Virgin Islands can be used to integrate environmental issues into decision making;
- To identify short, medium and long term actions necessary to promote the concept underlying the project - the fundamental importance and economic value of the natural environment; and
- To contribute to establishing a common understanding of what is needed to integrate environmental issues into the planning processes in the British Virgin Islands.
Activities:
a. A review and scoping study: the study established the type and nature of information available and through scoping allowed a provisional assessment of gaps in knowledge, legal capacity and the capacity of government and wider society to act on knowledge and implement legislation to protect and manage the environment
b. A review and stakeholder consultation process: the stakeholder consultation validated some of the information collected in the Review and scoping study and identified gaps and barriers to the implementation of environmental mainstreaming and short, medium and long term actions for the implementation of environmental mainstreaming.
