Climate change in the UK Overseas Territories

In 2008, CANARI partnered with the UK’s Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) to produce a range of communication and outreach products relating to the impacts of climate change in the UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs), six of which lie within or close to the Caribbean region (Anguila, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Montserrat, Turks and Caicos Islands),

The project was based on the UK’s recognition that many of its Overseas Territories are rich in biodiversity yet particularly vulnerable to climate change. The island Territories in particular are likely to face:

  • increases in sea temperature;
  • sea level rise;
  • more intense storms, with more rain, stronger winds and higher storm surges
  • changes in regional seasonal rainfall patterns, increasing the risk of droughts and flooding events.

Accurate and relevant information was seen as a prerequisite to facilitate the development of practical strategies for adaptation to and mitigation of climate change.

The project outputs are listed below and are available at JNCC’s website http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-4362. Hard copies are also available from JNCC and CANARI have a small stock for Caribbean libraries and display at conferences.
