FORESTS & LIVELIHOODS

Practices and policies that improve forest management and the livelihoods of the rural poor in the insular Caribbean (2007-2010).

Case studies
CANARI is preparing a series of case studies of forest management initiatives designed to provide socio-economic benefits to the rural poor. Some of these are specially commissioned and in-depth whereas others are shorter and based on an Action Learning Group field trip and subsequent analysis. All the case studies seek to analyse the institutional arrangements (e.g. policies, legislation, practices, structures and processes), the degree of stakeholder participation, the shaping and enabling factors, the livelihood benefits and costs and the extent to which these have been equitably distributed. They also provide recommendations as to how the initiative might be enhanced and what wider lessons can be learned from it.

These case study analyses will feed into a set of recommendations about the type of institutional arrangments that can optimise the socio-economic contribution of forest resources to the rural poor of the islands of the Caribbean
