Project Purpose
To influence policy and practice and facilitate knowledge sharing on community forestry and sustainable forest-based livelihoods to enhance governance in the Caribbean region by drawing lessons from past projects and condensing key messages in user friendly “Guidelines for Participatory Forest Management and Participatory Governance” combined with other information products.

Background
In the Caribbean islands, multi-sectoral, participatory and collaborative approaches to forest management are gaining acceptance because of the improved understanding of the concept of participatory forest management and the type of governance needed for effectively linking forests, livelihoods, poverty reduction and improved forest law compliance and enforcement. Increasingly, more information on participatory forest management initiatives in the region are being documented. However, very little of the messages and lessons from these initiatives are reaching poor, rural community groups who depend on forest for their livelihoods.
This project will build the capacity of poor, rural community groups to effectively participate in the governance of forest through the participatory development of a suite of communication products drawing on lessons learnt and experiences gained from past projects.
These products will be developed using a participatory approach by including forest managers trained in facilitation by the project entitled “Building capacity for participatory forest management for good governance in the Caribbean region” under the ACP-FLEGT Programme.
Project Activities
Compiling a 15-page 'lessons learnt' document on participatory forest management from working in Small Island States in the Caribbean from 2005 to present
This activity will compile a database of materials developed by CANARI from 2005 to 2012 and prepare a document that will provide:
- Description of the actions completed during the identified period and methodologies used, and brief summary of the evolution of community forest management and participatory governance;
- Highlight key successes and challenges;
- Identify key observations and findings;
- Provide recommendations to improve success of community forest management and participatory governance objectives.
Host virtual meetings with forest managers
These meetings will provide forest managers in the region with the opportunity to participate in the selection and formulation of products for the dissemination of selected messages from the 15-page "lessons learnt" document.
Dissemination and evaluation
Products developed under the project will be disseminated to forest managers in the English-speaking Caribbean and the response evaluated and documented.
